Just my opinion and feelings...

I find it hard to say "Happy Memorial Day".

As a veteran, and as a former police sergeant, I have had the very unfortunate duty to bury colleagues. Combat, illness, shootings and car crashes. Too many have fallen.

But, they did step into the gap between peace and chaos, evil and innocent. Some simply served and somehow made it unscathed.

Some came home with baggage and demons. Emotional, psychological and physical issues.

I am one of the latter.

Celebrate those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. Celebrate and support those they left behind.

Happy? I am not happy to have lost those brave ones. I am not happy for the baggage, scars and issues. I am, however eternally grateful to God for the great country that would not have survived without them.

So happy Memorial Day....

Hi Martin. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this day of Memorial. Thank you also for your service and sacrifice. It is more a solemn and thankful day for me than a happy one. I am thankful for my father, uncles, brother, son and so many others who chose to serve their country in support of freedom that we enjoy. Today especially we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. They had lives before them that were taken away in service to others. "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13. Jesus said this knowing full well that He would give the ultimate sacrifice for us all, Himself.

Blessing to you and to all who have and are serving our great nation. May we live lives worthy of your sacrifice.

HI Martin. I understand fully what you're saying. I had a few friends in 'Nam that went home early...... not because they would have wanted to. But just because they didn't make it. So their bodies were sent on home. By God's good grace, I served my full year's tour to come home alive. Not whole, as you pointed out, but again, it was grace that saved me. Wasn't until 16 years later, at age 38, that I found forgiveness in Christ. If not for Him, I'd still be a mess, as many of our brothers are still today. So today I honor those brothers that gave their all, but also those who are still fighting that war that ended 50 years ago.
