On a trip to Port St. Joe, FL I asked a local marine mechanic if he could tell me why my 2005, Susuki 4 stroke weighed so much compared to most all other 60 hp engines..over 100 lbs. more. He claimed the following: That year Suzuki had an overage of 110 hp motorcycle engines which they adapted to use in marine engines. The hp was adjusted by "detuning" them for 60's, up to 90's. I really like this engine, but I have had to add ballast to the bow to keep the boat even adding 150 lbs. to onboard weight which is no problem for what is the most powerful 60hp engine I've ever used. It runs more like a 90hp. And..the prop on this engine is much bigger than any 60hp I've ever seen. The mechanic claimed also the engine should last a long time due to lack of stress on it to push my tiny 15' Logic...hot rod. I wonder if anyone else out there has had any experience like this with an over sized small marine engine.
