Have a 2001 201CC with a 2001 Merc 150. Recently a loud, irritating alarm went off. The device is located in the center console, a small 1" black plastic box with two wires running into it. Thought it was from overheating and have replaced poppett valves and the water pump is peeing just fine. Still get alarm after 20 min operation. What kind of alarm is this? Low oil to motor? Is there some way to determine whether the alarm is defective?

I would assume the alarm is correct and take the motor to a mechanic or at least check the owners manual to see what the alarm means. If you do not have an owners amnual look the motor up on line and you can usually read an online version pfd. file. Its an older motor.I'm guessing it is a 2 stroke motor. It could have a blockage in the oil to motor tube. Good luck.

There may be a thermostat in the motor. If it's closed, you will overheat even though the motor is "peeing". Pee water is cold and just shows the water pump working.
