I bought the one from Harbor freight, and its the one recommended useing on the plastic rod welding

I use this hot air welder, bought at Harbor Freight, made by Chicago Electric, but apparently no longer made. It's not shown on either website at all. But there are many similar units out there. This one has an adjustable temperature and its own built-in fan.

Well, you did better than I at finding it. LOL. It wouldn't find with my search terms..... anyway, YES I think it works very well. I usually use the #4 or 5 heat setting. However, i see the new one is 1600 watts, vs. my older 1300 watt model. So you will likely need to experiment a bit. Temp will need to be somewhere around 270°F.
