Servicing the Lower Unit
by Steve Stephens

This post describes my experience changing the lower unit gear lube.

All parts were purchased from my friends Andy and Lisa at Shipyard Island Marine Engine Parts.

Tilt the motor up and remove the lower plug. This requires a "hefty" regular screwdriver.

I placed a jug with a funnel in it under the lower plug, then I removed the top plug.

I let it drain for a couple minutes, then tilted the motor down a little.

I inspected the plugs and installed new gasket on them. The old lube looked good and no metal was found on the lower plug.

Here is the pump assembly that comes with the Yamaha lube kit.</p>

Insert the fitting into the lower plug hole, hand tight.

Start pumping!

Until the lube starts to come out of the top plug hole.

Reinstall the plugs, top one first!

And we are done.
Hope this helps someone!
